We are delighted to report that this year’s CONSTRUCT Day was another great success. The event took on a slight change in timings as we decided on a 3pm kicked off followed by a sit-down dinner and awards ceremony which took place at the Grade I listed warehouse, Tobacco Dock. The event took place on Friday 30 September, reuniting and introducing our guests from the concrete structures industry.
After a successful exhibition, networking and drinks reception in the Great Gallery Courtyard, guests were ushered into the Great Gallery for Dinner. CONSTRUCT Chairman Neil Marney gave a warm welcome followed by a presentation by the Lighthouse Club Charity and we also heard from our headline sponsor, Fosroc International.
The evening’s dinner and awards ceremony commenced, hosted by the brilliant, Kerry Godliman. Kerry is a comedian and actor whose work ranges from her own radio sitcom to Live at the Apollo, from the National Theatre to BBC One’s Our Girl to Ricky Gervais’ Derek and After Life.
In the awards section we recognised six winners were for their outstanding achievements in the sector, from innovative new products and systems, to the hardworking, committed workforce that support the construction industry. The award categories saw some changes this year; the projects over and under were separated into two categories, and CONSTRUCT partnered up with the Post-Tensioning Association (PTA) to host the PTA Best Project Award. Therefore, the categories consisted of, Projects, Health & Safety, Unsung Hero, Young Achiever and PTA Best Project Award.
Kingscote Design Ltd, Part of Morrisroe Group – Norton Folgate, took home the PTA Award for their project, British Lands Blossom Street Development.
Oliver Connell & Son Ltd won the Health & Safety Award with their Oliver Connell WAY Leadership Project. The “OC WAY Leadership Project” was rolled out in 2021 cross the entire business, in 2022 we are bearing the fruits from our efforts and continue to do so with 3.5m Hours RIDDOR free. Oliver Connell & Son HSE Statistics have been improving year on year. After a very successful 2020, the Oliver Connell & Son board discussed how we could maintain upward trajectory of the HSE performance, with tangible and quantifiable results that would enable us to score our efforts and measurable its output. Having recently achieve ISO 45001 which focuses on Leadership. We decided to create our own Leadership Program.
Gareth Bannister from Anderson Group was awarded Unsung Hero and George Smith, from Interspan Europe Ltd, won the Young Achiever Award. Both candidates were awarded on their dedication and commitment to the construction industry.
Oliver Connell & Son Ltd where awarded the Project of the year (under £2.5m) Award for Emmanuel College. Oliver Connell & Son Ltd were appointed to construction the new Student’s accommodation building at Emmanuel College. Our work comprises of a new two-storey basement with a thick concrete transfer slab, down stand beams and stair cores. The Basement excavation was formed using sheet piles with capping beam and consisted of 8000 cubic meters of excavation. The heavy steel props spanning across the basement were attached to large reinforced corbels for the temporary earthworks support.
John F Hunt Ltd where awarded the Project of the year (over £2.5m) Award for High Street Kensington. Set in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, the iconic former Odeon Kensington Cinema is one of the most high- profile super-prime residential development opportunities in London, surrounded by prestigious residential properties to the full perimeter with a bank directly adjacent.
CONSTRUCT would like to thank everyone who donated to its official charity, the Lighthouse Club, including those who participated in the live auction, which all in all raised a fantastic £9,807 for the charity. The money raised will go to helping relieve poverty suffered as a result of an accident, disability or ill health by people employed or formerly employed within the building and civil engineering industries.
